Me? IaEUR (TM) m not Lurker!

A recent study habits of Americans social media (source: ClickZ article Heidi Cohen 3/7/2011) indicates that only 10% of social media users to create original content; Appointment of the other 90% "lurkers".

While those of us who have spent time in chat rooms are familiar with the term, most people find offensive labels.
Wikipedia definition: "in the Internet culture, lurker is a person who reads the discussion board messages, news, chat, file sharing, or other interactive systems, but rarely or never participates actively. Wikipedia continue to refer to the previous (2000) study of Internet chat rooms that 90% that are referenced in the new study.

After reading the new study, I quoted this statistic in my seminars when someone says something like "I read Facebook, but I didn't post", and I always get the same reaction when I did: "I am not a lurker!

It turns out that many people perceive various negative connotations the word names as: Lounger, spy, Peeper, vagrant, etc seem to be lurkers make us feel as airline passengers whose seatmate read our laptop.

Now Wikipedia points out that: "in contrast, many modern Internet communities advise newbies to lurk for a while to get a feel for the specific culture and etiquette community so that they are inappropriate or unnecessary comment, ask a question frequently asked, or incite a flame war. This results in a more tongue-in-cheek command "hide". The verb "de-lurk" means to start actively involved community, formerly lurker ".

So in this context, hidden is acceptable for newcomers to the community, in the hope that once acclimated, they would actively participate. Nevertheless, in accordance with the provisions of article Heidi Cohen above 90% keep hidden forever. Why?
One possible answer that Internet lurking as watching reality TV. We want to be entertained and foibles of others, with real life, become a spectator sport. We can laugh and learn without risk of contamination.

Another reason could be that most people are passive communicators. That ever attended a long meeting with a lot of people who've seen variations of this 90/10. I personally have seen many colleagues, senior managers, from interns to sit through one meeting after another without ever uttering one syllable. Recently high example…Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has held over the past five years, never again speaking at the Conference! Not once in five years! Now that's a lurker!
